Migraines & Acupuncture

Migraines & Acupuncture

In this series I will discuss acupuncture and how it relates to back pain, migraines and even weight loss.

Migraines – Causes

Migraines tend to stump the medical and health community. Two people can have migraines for completely different reasons, but with common themes. For example, did the migraine come after the person had whiplash, or is the migraine occurring after the patient is at their desk for too long?

Treating Headaches with Chiropractic Care

Do Pharmaceuticals Help?

I speak to many patients around the Asheville area who try pharmaceuticuals but have never found a complete solution to their migraine, even with pain medication. A migraine is so intense that it can cut through the medication. While pharmaceuticals can be extremely helpful with mitigating migraines, the migraine cannot be prevented with medication if there is an unresolved underlying vascular or neurological issue.

Vascular and Neurological Components

There is often a both a vascular and neurological component to migraines. This means that by seeing a chiropractor who combines acupuncture as a form of treatment, you can have a greater benefit as a patient than with either modality alone. Not only can you fix the structure, you can work on solving the neurological issues. Adjusting the neck can be helpful with migraines. There are many ways to have a headache. If it is a vascular headache or neurologic headache, you can adjust 1,000 times but it might not be the right modality to fix the issue. Instead, acupuncture and Chinese medicine may provide a solution to a patient’s migraine issues.
