Foot Care Part 1

If you spend your time running in Asheville, hiking in Asheville or biking in Asheville, this series will be of interest to you.

Did you know we are the only mammal with an arch in our feet? Our foot is really good for jumping across streams, it is good for upright walking. Most mammals don’t live as long as humans, but we live a very long time due to modern technology. Inevitably gravity begins to pull you down. This changes the shape of your natural arch and can create a variety of concerns.

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Bunions
  • Heel spurs
  • Flat feet
  • Overpronating

Our foot goes through 4 stages as we move: heel strike, pre-mid stance, mid-stance and push off. Our foot works like a teeter totter, when this mechanism breaks down, we see these diagnoses. As gravity pulls us down we lose a healthy arch.

Wondering how your feet are doing? Look at a mirror – if your feet dont look similar you may be having a problem on one side. If your big toe starts pointing toward your little toe or your tolls start to roll inward, you may have a problem. If your big toe starts to point toward your little toe, it means your arch is collapsing or your big toe is trying to carry to much weight – instead of your foot working like a teeter totter, your foot is starting to slap the ground.
